To preface this, I want to make my level of experience with this game clear. I have (had, now, I suppose) played this game since at least 2018, back when it was under its first ownership and still in the early double digits of its first iteration's in-game calendar. I deleted a lot of my older logs years ago, but the oldest one I can dig up is from January 6th 2019, aka early year 25 ingame- and it's not from my very first character, so I truthfully can't tell you exactly when I began playing. I just know it was well before Jan 6 '19. That's at least 6 years of my life put into playing this game on a nearly daily basis.
What can I say about Marosia that hasn't already been said by dozens of other reviewers? Marosia was a joy to play. Emphasis on WAS. It stopped being fun approximately two years ago, when its current head admin- Sancon, by the way, I'm not going to dance around names- took the reigns.
I would actually go so far as to say it was even more enjoyable when Will was at the head. I know, I know. If you actually know what I'm talking about, you're gasping right now. But hey, I've been here since virtually the beginning, and not even he was able to make me want to do what I did yesterday.
Quit Marosia, that is.
Now, I'll quit moaning and go onto the actual meat of this review. I'll avoid parroting the same thing everyone else does. If you're on this site, you've probably already seen the (entirely true) claims that Sancon and her staff of white knights treat the game like a playground for themselves alone. That they preach about removing yourself from scenes you dislike, only to make it virtually impossible to do so by following your characters around wherever they might go to escape, be that by tailing them onto roads or pickpocketing keys so you can't even find respite in locked buildings...and then punishing you if you take the only remaining option available to you to escape their unbearable pseudo-immortal "baddies" (hibernation). All of this is true, and I've put up with Sancon's Sanconning multiple times until it's got to this point.
I'd like to point out, quickly, that I even LIKE spicy roleplay. For God's sake, I'm the one who founded the new world's most brutal city that still stands and influences other characters today (Dead End). But Sancon? That's not spice. That's just egotistical powerplaying. It's boring. Its tired. Its annoying.
So, what do I have to add? Well, I think- aside from the in-game pains she and her goons cause- there's more to be said about the ooc ramifications of it. I'll put it plainly.
Sancon doesn't care that she is making the game miserable for anyone who has the misfortune of getting anywhere near her as a person or her characters, and her staff fully enable her narcissistic delusions. As long as she, in her mind, is "following the rules and etiquette", it doesn't matter how her actions effect other people around her. The mere suggestion that the negative reviews all directly mentioning her, the dropping player count, and the nosediving patreon support must mean something goes in one of her ears and out the other, pushed along by her equally delusional staff team. I know this to be a set in stone fact, because she was recently called out for this exact behavior and on breaking her own rules to make it possible, and guess what happened? Deny, deny, deny, all backed up by her little disciples.
Marosia is not a game that cares about you, and it never will be. Until a genuine miracle happens and Sancon gets hit over the head with the realization that she's a steaming narcissist with a victim complex, then nothing will change. The rules are only there to enable her and the rest of the equally callous team. Furthermore, the only reason this game sees any success is because of a lack of true competitors. FTO is gone and cantr just doesn't compare to the more modern Marosia. A lack of competition is not a good reason for success.
Anyway.
Do not play this game. And if you absolutely must, then avoid the community, put your characters in some tiny nook in the middle of nowhere, and pray, pray, pray that you never encounter any characters played by Sancon or the rest of the staff.
As for me, I'm done. As silly as it is- its just a game, after all- I'm truly heartbroken that it's come to this for me. It's been...an eventful six years, and I'm going to mourn the ghost of what Marosia used to be for a long time. At least until a viable competitor comes along and sweeps me off my feet. So long, space cowboy.
